PFAS - uncontrollable danger?

Extrusion blow molding | 08. September 2023

Lately, we have been hearing and reading more and more about "PFAS". But what means “PFAS” at all? PFAS stands for "Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances “According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection in Germany, this group of substances can be found in more than 10,000 different substances and materials.

They are not natural substances or material and they are produced since the late 1940s.

They are are a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. Fluoropolymer coatings can be in a variety of products.

PFAS are also used to treat surfaces and are a component of pesticides and fire extinguishing agents.

They are extremely durable and spread rapidly over the water. They also accumulate in human and animal organisms. . Various effects on health have been demonstrated, although there is still no exact statement on what the effects are.

Fact is, however, that we ingest them in large quantities through drinking water, food (especially animal food) and packaging.

Animal food in particular is a PFAS carrier because animals also ingest  these substances. They enter other food through the water it contains and the packaging it comes in.

But what is being done about it now?

Since 2023, there are maximum levels of PFAS for fish, meat, eggs and drinking water.

The right packaging can also help to prevent the substances from getting into our food chain.

Many coatings for hollow plastic bodies on the market contain fluorine and with this the risk that PFAS will araise and transmitted into the food product.

The so-called CoEx4 barrier technology enables us to use extrusion blow molding for the production of packaging with a barrier layer, using EVOH or PA. Using these barrier materials This eliminates the risk of PFAS entering the food chain. CoEx4 technology is a long-time existing and proven technology , developed by  W. MÜLLER EBM Technology which can be perfectly integrated into your existing mono or ReCo blow molding machinery with an upgraded extrusion head, extruders and easy to handle control system.
